What are Chinchillas Like as Pets?
Chinchillas can make good pets because of their very active and playful
nature and their soft and cuddly fur. When you want to buy a pet
chinchilla, it is important that you know some of its general
characteristics and traits. This is because chinchillas are unique pets
that have distinct demands unlike that of other more common pets such
as cats and dogs.
One of the characteristics that you need to know about chinchillas is
that they have unique personalities, much like humans. As a matter of
fact, their attitudes are so varied there is no known rule to follow
with regards to predicting their behavior. Variations in behavior
include the following. Chinchillas love to be petted in different
areas; some like it on the head, while others under their chin. Then
again, some chinchillas don't like to be petted at all. Even if you
train a chinchilla to want to be petted at birth, other factors or a
stronger predisposition might affect it so that when it grows old, your
pet chinchilla will dislike petting.
Pet chinchillas should be fed with hay, preferably timothy hay, and
chinchilla pellet food. Hay provides your pet with the roughage it
needs to have a healthy digestive system. Pellets, on the other hand,
should ideally be plain. Some pellets that can be bought from pet
stores are loaded with chinchilla treats such as raisins and nuts which
can only lead to obesity and diabetes. These treats should only be
given in small amounts, for example, one raisin per day, and should not
be part of a chinchillas regular pellet diet.
The playful nature of chinchilla is reflected in its desire to run
about. Having a cage wheel is not enough for chinchillas. They need to
get out of the cage and run around your house because they love
exploring their environment. In addition, you should be wary of the
fact that they love to chew, so you should keep your chinchilla away
from electrical wirings or furniture that you don't want to see being
chewed!
Another characteristic that you need to consider is their tendency to
poop frequently and a lot. This requires you to clean the cage every
day, and fortunately, that is something that is not so hard to do since
chinchilla poop is dry and shaped like pellets.
The short attention span (kind of like me) and stubbornness of
chinchillas might get in the way if you want to train them with tricks.
This makes training chinchillas a lot more difficult than with other
pets such as dogs and cats. Probably the easiest things to teach a
chinchilla is to recognize their name and the word no, but other than
that, you need a lot more time and patience to teach them tricks than
you normally would with other pets.
Chinchillas have a long life span of about 10 to 20 years. There is a
good chance that if you have a pet dog as well, your chinchilla will
outlive that pet dog. This is something you need to consider because
you have to gauge your commitments prior to buying it, and see if you
are up to the task of having a long term relationship with your pet. If
you think you do not have enough time to care for its entire lifespan,
you may want to consider buying an older chinchillas.
These are just some of the things you need to know and understand
before having a chinchilla as pet, so that you can give it proper care
and attention.
